Dance photography - Movement and Emotion

What fascinates me about dance photography is the challenge of capturing movement and the emotions associated with it. Dance photography is a fascinating genre of photography for me because I am a dancer myself. My passion is Lindy Hop – a couple dance from the 1930s. Beyond that, I'm fascinated by all forms of dance, whether hip-hop, modern dance, or other couple dances.

At the heart of dance photography is the challenge of capturing movement and emotion at precisely the right moment. This requires not only the perfect timing, but also an understanding of the dance itself. This requires analyzing and anticipating movement sequences.

Dance photography thrives on dynamics, appropriate lighting, and composition. Fast jumps and movements are particularly challenging, as the lighting situation in dance is often challenging.

I like both: standing on the sidelines, observing and waiting for the decisive moment - as unnoticed as possible - but also staged shoots where you work specifically with light to bring out movements and poses.

For me, dance photography is a constructive collaboration at eye level between photographer and dancer.
